Why insurance agencies struggle with SEO (and how E-E-A-T changes the game)

Search almost any insurance phrase, and the same familiar names dominate the results: giant comparison platforms, national carriers, aggregator sites with enormous marketing budgets. A local agency with genuine expertise and a loyal client base often sits several pages back, wondering where all that hard-earned trust disappeared to. Insurance falls into a category Google treats with unusual care, known as YMYL, Your Money or Your Life, where shaky information carries genuinely serious consequences.

The category that demands more

Google evaluates YMYL content through E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trust. A page earns strong rankings when it shows real experience with the subject, comes from a genuinely qualified source, carries recognized authority, and earns trust through consistent accuracy. Large comparison sites often stumble on the experience and expertise pillars specifically, since generalist writers produce much of their content rather than licensed professionals working the field every day. A real opening exists here for agencies ready to put their genuine expertise on display.

Common gaps worth closing

Plenty of agency websites still lean on generic, templated content supplied by a carrier or vendor, content nearly identical to hundreds of other agency pages. Blog posts often skip clear author credentials, reading as anonymous filler rather than expert insight. Local SEO fundamentals, a complete Google Business Profile, consistent citations, location-specific pages, sit underused despite insurance remaining a deeply local business. And a single website, standing alone without reviews or industry mentions, represents just one voice vouching for itself, something search algorithms weigh far lighter than genuine external validation.

Building real E-E-A-T

Real progress starts with attribution: a named, credentialed author beside every article, complete with a short bio describing licenses and experience. Content built from actual experience, walking through how a real claim unfolded or what a client learned along the way, carries genuine weight that generic policy explanations rarely match.

Answering the questions clients actually worry about, what happens if a claim gets denied, how a major life event reshapes coverage, earns both search visibility and real trust. A strong local presence through an actively managed Google Business Profile, paired with genuine third-party mentions like local press coverage or an industry partnership, rounds out the kind of authority signals this category rewards.

Insurance searches often carry real urgency behind them. Someone asking whether their policy covers a burst pipe likely stands in a stressful moment right now. A page answering that question with precision serves the reader well and tends to perform strongly in search too, since algorithms increasingly reward content that genuinely resolves the concern behind the query. This favors local agencies with deep, specific community knowledge over broad comparison sites stretched thin across every topic imaginable.

Where to start?

Gathering the ten questions clients ask most often, answering each with clear, expert-backed content, and steadily building local and third-party trust signals creates a genuinely achievable path toward stronger visibility, standing confidently beside much larger competitors.
